Project Description:
As a designer, it is important to be able to source inspiration from the world around you. This project was meant to bring that principle into practice. The designs you see here were drawn from light refractions through a crystal bowl, and will, after several iterations, become a vinyl record cover.
The next phase of the project was to take the shapes I drew and make them something more. By examining something with a different perspective, what can it become? This was paired with a typographic study to find a font which emulated a word, that in turn emulated what I found within my initial sketches.
After selecting my favorite design, I performed a color study. Experimenting with cool compliments, warm hues, a monochromatic palette and texture.
Finally my vinyl record cover began to take shape. I chose to move forward with the textured cover because of how it mirrored the softness and intricacy of Vance Joy's music. His melodies often flow as if they are liquid themselves, which perfectly pairs with the title River. I also decided to incorporate texture typographically in order to bring the artist's name to life without taking away from the delicacy of the background.
